Enlightened Science originates from the life’s work of Anthony Colombo. As an instructor at the University of Arizona and president of a multimedia production company, Anthony explored indigenous culture and sustainable practices.
He moved to Hawai’i Island in 1999, at which time he began working as a multimedia producer and consultant for groups such as 'Aha Pūnana Leo, the World Wide Indigenous Science Network and Nu'u Mau's agricultural village project. He also served as the principal director for the North Kohala Community Development Plan and as a board member for the Kohala Community Land Trust.
Along the way, Anthony shifted his focus from preserving culture and sustaining resources to growing culture and co-creating resources. For him, the shift beyond sustainability starts by recognizing our greatest resource - the infinite potential of the human spirit, imagination and dreams.
In early 2008, he began conducting dream research at the Resonance Project - a science research facility and permaculture farm in Hōlualoa. There, Anthony organized “Dream Ins” - a term he coined for group dreaming activities similar to those practiced by indigenous tribes. The Dream In results were so extraordinary that Anthony brought Dream Ins to wider audiences in Hawai’i, Arizona and California.
In Arizona, renowned physicist, Elizabeth Rauscher, joined Enlightened Science as its lead scientist. Elizabeth and Anthony re-envisioned an “Imaginarium” as a multimedia planetarium for the imagination and then later as a holistic human habitat designed to support the integration of imagination and dreams into waking life and daily activities.
During the summer of 2009, Deborah Davis joined Enlightened Science as its co-director and general manager. Deborah’s past work in the creative arts and communications industries included growing businesses into multi-million dollar organizations and presiding over related non-profit associations. Lifelong activism led Deborah to permaculture and in 2005, she took a lead role with Boulder Valley Relocalization - an organization focusing on localizing food, economy and energy.
Anthony and Deborah share leadership of Enlightened Science. Anthony directs media and event production. Deborah manages communications, tasks and resources. Together, and with input from Elizabeth and a wide array participants, they advance Enlightened Science’s methodologies and strategies.
